“Finding Your Way to Yes”

(excerpts from guest lecturer Justin Jackson, CEO of Shut Up and Kiss Me, to business students at Howard University)

“ . . . because the thing you’ve absolutely got to know about the past is that it’s over. And the thing you’ve also got to know about the future is that it’s unknowable. I mean, if you’d asked me ten years ago, where would I be now, what would I be doing now, I’d have been dead wrong. That’s one hundred percent sure. I wish you guys could have met me in high school. You know what I wanted more than anything else in high school? I wanted to pierce my nose. Yeah, I’m not kidding. Thank God my wife talked me out of that bullshit. Can I say bullshit here? Yeah? No? Okay, well, I’m just going to go with it.

Anyway, what you can do, and this is always true no matter where you are or what you’re doing, is embrace the present moment. Say yes to now, that’s a little saying of mine. Do the best job you possibly can at what you’re doing right now. Love it. Even if you’re, I don’t know, cleaning toilets or something. Because first, whatever you’re doing, it’s not like you have a choice. You don’t choose the hand you’re dealt, just how you play it. And second, that energy, that’s attractive to people. That makes them want you to be around. That makes them want to give you stuff to do, more opportunities.

So I quit worrying about the past, the present, a long time ago. I just focus on what I’m doing now. I say yes to now. And I’m a lot happier that way. And a lot more successful. People want to keep giving me stuff to do, you know, like managing brands and all that. So it’s worked out, and it’s kind of cool . . .”
